"Argh! English spelling! It's so weird!"
It is completely weird, I agree. I even had to look up the spelling of a word in the last sentence -the word 'weird' - because it's hard for me to spell. One reason English spelling can be so weird is that lots of our words come from other languages. In the video below, you will learn how to pronounce the word 'chocolate' like a native English speaker. Chocolate, chocolate! Today's word is 'chocolate.' 'Chocolate' looks like it should have three syllables. CHO-CO-LATE CHO-CO-LEIT? Sometimes I hear it pronounced like that. But, a native English speaker usually says 'CHAWK - lit' Just two syllables. Why don't you try it with me: CHAWK - lit CHAWK - lit Let's just try the second part first: Lit Lit Forget that it's spelled, L-A-T-E. It sounds like: L't L't It's a very short sound. Lit Good! Now let's put it together with the other part of the word. Say it after me: CHAWK CHAWK - lit CHAWK - l't All right. I wanna give you a practice sentence. My mom always prefers dark chocolate. You can repeat after me: My mom always prefers dark chocolate. Ok, what about you? What's your favorite kind of chocolate? Try and use it in a sentence down here in the comments.
