. Reading funny jokes is a simple and entertaining way to study English. You can learn new vocabulary and phrases through jokes as well as get some insights* into what Americans, Brits, Australians, etc. find humorous*. You will also learn about culture through studying jokes. I've rounded up* five of my recent favorite jokes and puns* from around the Internet. I have also included some explanations to help you study deeper!: 1. Hi Honey, I'm Home! From brainlesstales.com WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO UNDERSTAND THIS JOKE In this cartoon, we see a house and a pot of honey. But there is a double meaning to both of these items! Honey is a term of endearment*, like 'baby', 'sweetie' or 'love', and we use the word 'home' to talk about our houses. This joke is a play on a typical phrase that people use when they get home and call out to their spouse: "Hi honey, I'm home!" ......................... 2. Green Dinosaur: I love you THIS much! Yellow Dinosaur: That's not very much... From lefthandedtoons.com WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO UNDERSTAND THIS JOKE This cartoon uses a common gesture* that shows how much you love or like something by stretching your arms out wide (and saying ...thiiiis much!). Awaah, poor T. Rex! This cartoon makes fun of how T. Rex's (the dinosaur) has such short arms - and can't show how much he loves the other dinosaur. ................................. 3. Granddaughter: No Grandma, one hand, like this. Grandmother: Whoops, I made a scarf! From comicsandmemes.com WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO UNDERSTAND THIS JOKE The two people in this cartoon are using chopsticks to eat (or at least trying to use chopsticks to eat). In the West, some people, especially the older generations, tend to* have trouble using chopsticks. The grandmother in this cartoon is knitting* with the chopsticks instead of eating eating with them! At least the grandmother has found SOMETHING she can do well! .......................... 4. Who wants change? .... Who wants to change? From 9gag.com WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO UNDERSTAND THIS JOKE Take a look at the grammatical difference of these two sentences: If you want change, you want something to be different. But, if you want TO change, you yourself have a desire to be different or make a change in your OWN behavior. I think this joke is pretty universal! We all want change (we want things to be better), but being the person who makes that change is the difficult part! ......................................... 5. How I look taking a selfie From theberry.com WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO UNDERSTAND THIS JOKE According to cold_eyes on UrbanDictionary.com, a selfie is: the act of taking your own picture. People who take a lot of selfies and post them all over social media sites also get a reputation* for being self-absorbed (really into themselves) and trying to show off.
But this funny baby just looks silly instead of attractive. I guess that's what happens when you try and show off too much with all your selfies! Word Bank: insight - an understanding humorous - funny, amusing to round up - to gather together, to bring together pun - a play on words that uses multiple meanings of the same wordterm of endearment - a sweet name we use for someone with like or love to tend to - to usually do/ to usually have gesture - movement in the body that means to knit - using yarn to make a sweater or other knit item reputation - what people think of you, often negative Which of these jokes is your favorite?
